Biography | |||||
Anaida Hernández was born in Puerto Rico and lives in New York. She keeps workshops in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and in City Island, New York. Hernández earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (1974) and a master's degree in engraving at the San Carlos School of the National Autonomous University (Universidad Nacional Autónoma) of Mexico (1977). Hernández is known for her work in diverse media, such as engraving, sculpture, video, installations, public art, and community projects. In this last genre she has used games, puzzles and riddles to explore issues concerning violence, migration, seduction, power, and human-rights-related subjects. Her work incorporates a personal vocabulary of signs and symbols derived from everyday objects, focusing on images that combine intellectual and emotional appeal. An example is her installation Till Death do us Part ( Hasta que la muerte nos separe ), a traveling show that explores the subject of domestic violence by denouncing the murder of 100 women in Puerto Rico, at the beginning of the 1990s. This installation has been shown in may places, such as the Capitol of Puerto Rico, San Juan (1994), The 5 th Havana Biennial, Havana, Cuba (1994), and the Ludwig Forum Museum, Aachen, Germany (1994), among others. This versatile artist is the director and executive producer of Two Minutes_NY , a series of 39 two-minute long video capsules in digital format about the contributions of latinos, particularly Puerto Ricans, in the United States. The series is broadcast by TUTV (Channel 6) Puerto Rico's public broadcasting station. |
